Ancient City of Side revived through digital experience

One of the notable examples of digital museology in Türkiye

One of the notable examples of digital museology in Türkiye can be found at the Visitors’ Center of the Side Archaeological Site in Antalya. Here, visitors can explore the fascinating past of the ancient city of Side through an immersive digital experience. In a special video installation created by Kup Production, the ancient city is virtually reconstructed using projection technology, bringing its grandeur back to life for today’s visitors.

The videos, prepared under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Feristah Alanyali, who leads the excavations at Side Ancient City, are designed to make visitors feel as though they are living within the space itself. Writer Huseyin Karagoz, who took part in the project, explained the followings:

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

“One of the conceptual inspirations behind the video used in this digital experience is the temple dedicated to Tyche, the goddess of fortune and fate, located at the center of the agora. Since Tyche was depicted in antiquity holding a disk known as the ‘wheel of fortune,’ the same motif seen in mosaics also appears as a visual element in the video. This wheel of fortune takes us on a journey through time —sometimes exploring beneath the seas, sometimes viewing the city from afar. It transports us to the Athena festivals once held to celebrate the start of the maritime trade season in the ancient era. We gather before the monumental fountain, walk through the agora, and leave offerings at the temples of Athena and Apollo. Then, aboard a boat adorned with a pomegranate tree at its stern and a statue of the goddess at its bow, we sail into the Mediterranean —experiencing Side’s legendary sunset as if we were living in ancient times.”
