In the Stratonikeia Ancient City, located in the Yatağan district of Muğla, water has been directed into the pool of the Roman bath for the first time in 1,900 years, following the completion of excavation and restoration works.
Stratonikeia, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, is known as “the City of Gladiators” and is considered among the largest marble cities in the world. Excavations that began in 1977 continue to this day. The ancient city is significant not only for the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, but also for the Menteşe Beylik, Ottoman, and Republican eras. New artifacts are being unearthed, and historical structures within the city are being restored.
Professor Dr. Bilal Söğüt, Head of the Stratonikeia and Lagina Excavation Team, stated that in this historically important area—one of the most significant cities of the Caria region—they are conducting archaeological excavations, restoration, and architectural drawing works on various structures dating from ancient times to the present. He emphasized that the works carried out in the Roman bath under the “Heritage for the Future Project” are particularly exciting:
“We have completed our excavation and conservation work here. Just as it was 1,900 years ago, we released the water back through the same channel, and it started flowing into the pool. It created an exciting atmosphere. In terms of leaving a heritage for the future, we have created a place that visitors can see, experience, and enjoy.” Prof. Dr. Söğüt added that, especially during these days of peak summer heat, visitors often try to enter the pool, but they explain that it is meant only for viewing. Their aim is to show how these pools functioned during the Roman period.
