The approximately 2000-year-old Medusa mosaic, which was covered over in the winter months in the ancient city of Kibyra in Gölhisar district of Burdur, was reopened to visitors.

The Medusa mosaic, which is located 108 kilometres away from the city centre and is among the rare ancient works of the world, was covered with 5 different layers by expert restorers during the winter months to prevent damage from weather conditions. The mosaic in the middle of the odeon, which served as a concert hall, assembly, court and theatre in ancient times, started to accept visitors in the 2024 summer season with its splendour.

Kibyra Ancient City Excavation Head and Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Archaeology Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Özüdoğru said that the floor mosaic will be visited until the end of November. It is stated that the mosaic, which was built from coloured marbles with the “Opus Sectile” technique in the early stages of the 1st century A.D., depicting Medusa, who is believed to turn malicious people who look at her eyes into stone in mythology, has no similar in the world.
